In the year 2011 I published a book 'For Your Pleasure'.
The book contains images of a series of works that show girls that just turned 18 years old, but look a lot younger than they are. The origin of these images is a website with 'barely 18 teen porn' where people (men) pay for footage in which you can see how every day another girl gets beaten up. This is legal and it's popular. The girls posing for these photos get paid for it. But one cound ask oneself: why would an 18 year old girl want to let herself beat up for money? How free of choice is she? Doing this all for your pleasure.
I downloaded the images, printed them on canvas and made embroideries that overlapped these photos which made them look innoncent and sweet. By doing this I created a contrast between the feeling you get when you first look at it and the actual image.

The book (numbered and signed, there are 1000 copies) is still available. (just a few copies left) cost: €25,- shipping in NL is free / other countries €6,- Language English.

Why do we like some animals - even see them as part of our families - and others not? I think the answer mainly lies in our capability of humanizing an animal. If we can imagine ourself that a certain animal has a character, feelings, a gender etc etc. our brain tells us: this is a human being. And when it is small, has big eyes and it's fluffy, we see it as a little baby. So, so far for a short lesson in psychology in how we emphatise with (some) animals.
Well, what if you change this? What happens when you change the looks of an animal that (in our eyes) usually has no personality, no feelings and
no gender? In my project SAVE THE SNAILS I did just that. and guess what happened...
People wanted to 'resque' the snails. Stole snails out of the exhibitions. Started petitions. Wrote articles on how cruel it was to use animals for a piece of art. - Did all kind of things to protect the exact same animals as they would usually poisen when found in their gardens. —> for the record. no animals were harmed in here. I used special glue and light weight materials. None of the snails bothered their new looks.
They just kept on being snails. The only difference was that people started to see them as 'persons' and with that, people felt that THESE snails could never be killed. So yes, I saved the snails by changing the way people saw them. -

So, last week when I arrived in NY to attend the #earthwedding of my dear friend @azelinskie whom I met 7 years ago when I did a residency in NY I knew that @svansaarloos from #Amsterdam just had moved to #NY so I already planned to catch up with her. And then, when I posted a facebook update on being here, my friend #VivianSong from #Shanghai whom I met in #China, also 7 years ago, texted me that she had also moved to NY. One day later I saw a photo on the instagram account of @michdulce , whom I met 6 years ago in the #Philippines, in which she mentioned to be in the exact neighborhood in Brooklyn as I am.
So I texted all these #girls - whom are, by the way, the most #amazing #superpowergirlfriends I have collected during my #travels in the past years - to get them all together. Which happened last night!! No need to say that we had a blast and kept on talking and I'm warning you all here: you are gonna hear from us. Because so much connected #superpower can be a #worldchanger!! - oh and my dear Ashley bought me a #birthday #cake and everybody sang to me!! 😀✨🎉❤️❤️❤️

Today. Brought a visit to Jan Hak. Apparently it's not just 'de groente van hak' - but a whole ecosystem van Hak. I got fresh honey (de honing van Hak), went to a biological baker and cuddled these pigs. 😍😍😍
